LODGING

Motels - There are more local options besides the four that we suggest. When dealing with a motel by phone, requesting a "discount" (e.g., AAA, senior, etc.) can often result in a quote lower than what is advertised online.
  • Vagabond Inn 310-831-8911 215 S. Gaffey, San Pedro 2/29-3/3.  There are block rate rooms reserved under Rosalie Preston $155/night
  • Double Tree by Hilton 2800 Via Cabrillo Marina
  • Crowne Plaza LA Harbor 601 S. Palos Verdes St, San Pedro
Vacation Rentals - Often more pleasant than a motel. If sharing with several people, this option can also be less expensive. Before booking, make sure that you are aware of the full cost, which typically includes additional fees.
Camping on Catalina Island Sunday night- There is a camping option on Catalina Island to extend your Sunday island tour to Monday.
  • The Catalina Island Conservancy have access to several camp sites. After the island tour the Conservancy will give you a lift to a grocery store in town for evening and breakfast meal supplies and then to the campground (Laura Stein Volunteer campground was their first choice - there are a couple other locations that servse as backup). They'll give you a lift back the following day.
  • You'll need a sleeping bag and a pillow according to them - I'd also add whatever bathroom notions and change of clothes that you want. Laura Stein campsite has four canvas-sided tents on raised decks, each tent has 8 padded bunk beds, a full kitchen, hot showers and flush toilets. It's located 5 or 6 miles from Avalon.
  • Arranging the details will be via email. Contact Brent Morgan (link at bottom of page) and he'll collect names/emails and pass them along to the Conservancy. The choice of return ferry is up to you.

TRANSPORTATION TIPS

Local Directions & Parking - Details to supplement the map (right) or your own online driving directions.
Tips for using map on right
- Use your mouse wheel to zoom the view!
- The enlarged map has more features. For instance the map spots include a "View in Google Maps" link, which will show you a photo of the location, if available.

On The Road

  • Ride Sharing - Why drive alone when there will be other delegates taking the same route?
  • Distances and times - Travel times can be vary dramatically.  Remember to add time when driving during urban rush hours.  Use of your phone to navigate can be essential.  Examples:

    • LAX to MJRC:  30 minutes to 1H 10 minutes on Thursday nights.
